You pay good money to get the perfect hair color so you want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to keep your hair color vibrant and your hair as healthy as possible.
There are a few questions you want to ask yourself when choosing shampoo for color treated hair.
- Lightening/highlighting hair and all over coloring/darkening hair are two different processes so you need a shampoo that treats the color process you get.
- Is your hair more frizzy, dry, tangle easily, or all of the above?
- What’s your hair texture?
Best Shampoo For Colored & Highlighted Hair
A great shampoo to use on highlighted hair is a protein shampoo with color protection. Protein shampoo is going to put protein filaments (chain of protein which include amino acids and keratin found in hair) back into hair which is removed during the lightening process causing hair to become porous. Signs of very porous hair are, dull, frizzy, and tangles easily.
Coloring hair, even if you’re going darker, can remove much need moisture which can leave your hair feeling dry and crunchy. The best shampoos for single process color (no highlights) are moisturizing shampoos with color protection.
Color Proof Heal & Repair Shampoo
I first used Color Proof products last summer and fell in love. This shampoo is all I used last summer to help my frizz and strengthen my hair. This shampoo is great for highlighted hair and is going to help add back elasticity and protect your hair from breakage. Color Proof Heal & Repair shampoo is perfect if you are looking to re-build protein in your hair that you lose when you highlight.
Bumble and Bumble Color Minded Shampoo
Bumble and Bumble uses their own special color safe complex in this shampoo to preserve and prolong hair color. It’s a sulfate-free shampoo and it’s gentle which makes it great for hair with highlights, color treated hair, or hair with a little bit of both. If you have fine hair grab a bottle of this color protecting shampoo it’s light so it won’t weight it down. Bumble and Bumble creates some of the best shampoos and one of my favorite sea salt sprays.
Oribe Shampoo For Beautiful Color
This definitely falls under the luxury shampoo category. This color protecting shampoo targets damaged areas of your hair to help bring moisture back to the hair and preserve hair color. Not only is it color safe it’s also safe to use on your hair if you get keratin treatments. Perfect for thicker, coarse hair. Paraben-free and sodium chloride free makes this shampoo ultra-gentle while protecting your color.
Redken Color Extend Shampoo
Redken hair care has been on top since the beginning. Redken started the movement of taking the scientific approach to beauty back in 1960. That’s what I’m all about and trying to bring back, why products actually work, not just that they look and smell pretty. Redken introduced reconditioning hair through protein reconstruction. It makes this shampoo perfect for re-building strength back into your hair that you lose through highlighting and coloring. It’s anti-fade, UVA/UVB and color protecting to leave you with shiny, healthy hair.
Redken All Soft Shampoo
Since Redken is a pioneer in the hair care game I want to also show you Redken All Soft shampoo. Laura Estroff, head colorist at Kennaland Salon in Brooklyn, NY, swears by this shampoo. Not only does she love it for her clients, she said ” It saved my hair”. She suggests using if you have curly, over-processed dry hair.
