A French Braiding Tutorial

The French Braid is one of the foundational braids that you’ll find in many different variations and hairstyles. Learning how to do a french braid takes practice, but with patience and persistence, you’ll be french braiding like a pro in no time.

Step 1) Prep your hair

Use a hair product like a serum or a light hold pomade to smooth flyaways and keep your braids looking sleek. I like to mix amika’s Glass Action and amika’s Heist Molding Paste.

Step 2) Comb or brush hair product throughout hair

This ensures even distribution.

Step 3) Part your hair

Part your hair down the center starting at your forehead and stopping at the crown.

Step 4) Start with three sections

Start the french braid by grabbing hair in the middle front section of your hair and split it into three smaller sections.

Step 5) Cross right over center

Take the right piece of hair and cross it over the center piece of hair.

That right piece of hair now becomes the centerpiece of hair and vise versa.

Step 6) Cross left over center

Now cross the left piece of hair over the center piece of hair.

That left piece of hair now becomes the center piece.

Step 7)

Grab a new section of hair from the right side (outside of the 3 sections) and add it to the right piece of hair. Take that whole combined piece and cross it over the middle section.

Step 8)

Grab a section of hair from the left side (outside of your sections) and add it to the left piece of hair. Take that whole combined piece and cross it over the middle section.

Step 9) Repeat Steps 7 & 8

Continue this down until you run out of hair.
