Preparing your hair before a blowout is the number one key to success. You want to use shampoo and conditioner for your hair texture to ensure proper preparation before you apply a styling product and heat protectant to your hair.
I only talk about shampoos, conditioners and products I have personally used on myself and my clients, so when I describe the results it’s from first hand experience.
Fine Hair
With fine hair you want to make sure you’re not using anything that will weigh down your hair. Stick with volumizing shampoo and conditioner, or a thickening shampoo and conditioner to give your hair volume and lift. This will give your blowout the body and fullness you are looking for.

I always talk about Moroccanoil products because I use them all the time and I’m always happy with the results. Another one of my favorites, the lovely Oribe Magnificent Volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Infused with natural ingredients to gently cleanse hair leaving it refreshed and full of life. It also protects your hair against heat styling tools and has UV protecting properties.
Living Proof Full Shampoo and Conditioner
I once had the pleasure of testing Living Proof products for an episode of the Dr. Oz show and was so happy to be able to show women a product that actually works. Residue can weigh your hair down; this shampoo removes oily residues from your scalp and product build-up to give your hair volume and body. It also repels dirt and oil so hair will stay cleaner and oil-free longer. The conditioner is lightweight to not weigh down hair, and provides amazing detangling and conditioning. Both are sulfate-free, silicone-free, and oil-free so hair will stay clean and healthy.
Medium Hair
Since you typically don’t wash medium hair texture every day you want to use a shampoo that will get your roots clean and keep your ends conditioned to prepare your hair for a blowout.

Goldwell Rich Repair Shampoo and Conditioner
I have been using goldwell products since the beginning of my career. Goldwell was founded in 1948 in Germany and has been one of the leading innovators for many firsts in the industry for hair care. This shampoo and conditioner helps repair dry, damaged hair leaving it soft and smooth. Curly medium hair textures can become dry and damaged easier than straight hair (curly hair is more fragile). Using rich repair helps heal your hair and leave it clean and conditioned and ready for a blowout.
Thick Hair
With thick hair you want to use a shampoo that is gentle, yet cleansing. Since you don’t typically have to wash thick hair everyday you want to make sure you are using a shampoo that will penetrate to your scalp to remove oil and buildup. Sometimes it’s tough to get through all that hair so I suggest doing two shampoos, followed with a moisturizing and hydrating conditioner.
Aquage Silkening Shampoo
I have been addicted to the shampoo and conditioner for a long time. It leaves hair so soft and silky smooth. It’s sulfate-free and gentle, yet the shampoo lathers and cleanses the scalp to remove buildup leaving your scalp super clean and refreshed. Kerastase Discipline Bain Shampoo and Conditioner
Kerastase products are perfection. I was introduced to this very shampoo and conditioner by a client of mine (you can always learn from everyone). The salon I was working in at the time didn’t carry Kerastase so she would bring her own shampoo and conditioner in to have me wash her hair with it. This shampoo and conditioner is a game changer. Before she came to me she unfortunately received a very over processed highlight and it fried her hair. With the first use of Kerastase Discipline her hair felt better. Within time I couldn’t believe how the condition of her hair changed and how much smoother her blowouts were becoming. This is a must use for not only over processed and over colored hair,but also for coarse, dry, frizzy hair. Your blowouts will thank you.
Davines Love Lovely Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner
Davines is such a pretty product line. I have this shampoo and conditioner in my shower as we speak. This shampoo and conditioner adds elasticity back to the hair and softens with fatty acids and vitamins. It’s awesome for unruly hair that just wants to be frizzy. It gently cleanses the hair and smooths out frizz. Not only do I love Davines products, Davines is also very environmentally conscious making sure the making of their products won’t harm the Earth. A plus for your hair and the planet.
